What are unhealthy diets and what factors contribute to them?
An
unhealthy diet is defined as the consumption of “high levels of high-energy
foods, such as processed foods that are high in fats and sugars” and salt.
(WHO, 2018). Unhealthy diets are positively associated with cardiovascular
diseases, obesity, high blood pressure, stomach and colorectal cancer as informed by web research
The
WHO defined Obesity as medical condition in which the Body Mass Index (BMI) is
greater than or equal to 30 and considers an adult overweight as the BMI greater
than or equal to 25. Conversely, Malnutrition is defined (FAO on web search) as
the deficiencies, excesses of imbalance in a person’s intake of energy and or
nutrient. This WHO global fact
about over weight and adult obesity is 13% whereas (11% of men and 15% of women)
and 38.3 million children under 5 years is overwhelming in 2016.
Obesity
according the FAO is cause by the imbalance between calories intake and calories
expended by an individual. Obesity occurs as a result of eating too much of
unhealthy foods and with little physical bodily activities. We can prevent obesity
by daily exercise least 30 minutes for adult and 60minutes for children Obesity is prevalence in high income
countries like America but malnutrition plus obesity is common in low and middle income countries.
This demonstrate food injustice and disparity. food cost and other
factors like socio cultural orientation of food consumption partners also contribute to
taking poor diet or low nutrient food or over nutrient food.
Malnutrition
unlike obesity is cause due to several factors including
Environmental or medical conditions; reduced food intake; Social
and mobility problems leading to difficulty in preparing or finding meals; Lack
of breastfeeding; Mental health problems like schizophrenia, depression,
dementia and anorexia nervosa; Digestive disorders and stomach conditions like
ulcerative colitis; Alcoholism etc..
