My
understanding and perception on ‘Food system resilience: defining the concept’,
paper wrttien by Tendall, D.M., et al
I want to start by
providing definition of food system and secondly to relate it to resilience Food
system is broadly defined as the range of activities involved in the production
up to the consumption of a product, while also considering the various actors
who are involved in ensuring the completion of the system. This definition can be conceptualized based
on a particular product and location. It worth noting that that the length of
food system largely depends on the type of product and the technical capacity
of the actors ie, modern vs traditional food system.
To achieve food security is the major
aim of food system, which can change by advent of both natural and man-made
disaster such, climate change effect, drought, flooding, sea level rise)
biological invasion of pest and disease, political instability, economic
crises, etc..
I
actually agree with the fact that majority of households’ especially in the
developing countries go hungry, although they spent half of their household
incomes on food. This may be due to many factors, such as lack of self-food
production, (importing major staple foods), misplace of priority by leaders,
corruption, etc.. food is highly priced in developing countries making the low
income household becoming poorer and poorer.
Resilience, as I feel about is “life
must go on” in clear context, resilience is the ability or capability of an
individual or groups to adapt to an uncomplimentary situation by either finding
an alternative means or conform with the unpredicted circumstances to ensure
that there is continuity in the process. As
I say “life must go on” see how closely related is resilience to
sustainability. I also perceive these two terminologies to be complimentary in
development. The goal of resilience could be
sustainability ????? becoming resilience could
The break in food system resilience and food security has a deadly consequence to human health and wellbeing. Developing countries are currently suffering from undernourishment which subsequently is affecting the growing population
