Environmental and Social impact on food system

News summary on the China’s Distant-Water Fishing and Its Impact in West Africa. a case study of sierra Leone   West Africa is one of the world’s most important fishing zones where fishing account for 20% of primary production and are an important source of nutrition for coastal populations in the region   The fisheries sector in sierra Leone provides foreign exchange, tax revenues and fish is the cheapest source of animal protein and nutrition, which is very key to addressing the country’s food security and malnutrition. The fisheries sector had provided over five hundred thousand jobs for Sierra Leoneans who depended on fisheries resources either directly or indirectly as a source of livelihood But over the decades, over-exploitation   through the illegal, Unregulated, and Unreported   fishing practice   has drastically reduced the marine fish production, and is again increasing due to ocean warming caused by climate change.   Studies h...

Food system Resilience

My understanding and perception on ‘Food system resilience: defining the concept’, paper wrttien by Tendall, D.M., et al   I want to start by providing definition of food system and secondly to relate it to resilience Food system is broadly defined as the range of activities involved in the production up to the consumption of a product, while also considering the various actors who are involved in ensuring the completion of the system.    This definition can be conceptualized based on a particular product and location. It worth noting that that the length of food system largely depends on the type of product and the technical capacity of the actors ie, modern vs traditional food system. To achieve food security is the major aim of food system, which can change by advent of both natural and man-made disaster such, climate change effect, drought, flooding, sea level rise) biological invasion of pest and disease, political instability, economic crises, etc..   I ...

Welcome to Activity 1.1   Topic 1 of the Global Food Systems and Health Module :  The introductory quiz was amazing, I tried so hard through guess work I got 6/10 correct. I had very little understanding of global statistic on this topic. This is an eye-opener. What is a food system ? The concept of a food system involves the wide range of activities and actors starting from the food production, processing, marketing, distribution, consumption and management of the waste.   There are different actors performing crucial roles and responsibilities to ensure that the food system is completed by obtaining the objective of food security- where everybody has the access to affordable and nutritious food for theirs well beings. The diverse actors are represented from household, local, national and global. The global reduction in hunger and food crises is largely a determinant of the success of the food system. However, many of the food system activities such as prod...
